CIVIL WAR CAMPOREE - 10/19/07

Rain, rain, go away...

We had a decent turnout from our troop for the Civil War Camporee. Wow! This was going to be fantastic! So many interesting activities, so much to see, so much to learn -- and so much rain. After a sopping wet night of thunderstorms, we decided to cut our losses and leave. Good decision since a Severe Thunderstorm Warning went into effect shortly after we left. We saw more rain on the Civil War Campout than on any other. After a night of constant downpour with near freezing temperatures, we decided to admit defeat and pack up. All was not lost, though, as we were able to spend some time with the reenactors. That part was fantastic!

We did get to do some things, even in the rain. It was impressive how well our Scouts set things up. Mr. T and Mr. B came early with some of the boys (before the Severe Storm Warning), and had camp pretty well set up. So well that the not- quite- prepared troop next to our spent a lot of time under our setup. The organizers complimented the boys on how good their encampment was. Duane got an excellent fire started that didn't die out until we put it out. Scouts had lunch on top of breakfast as Elisha struggled to get his meals requirement met (thanks Mr. B!). Zach took over as Patrol Leader for the weekend and, along with the SPL, did a great job. Mrs. Odell brought some great food for the adults while the Scouts ate a delicious meal of macaroni and cheese with hot dogs (those boys need to work on cooking!).

The high point of the trip was visiting the Civil War Encampment. We had a very enjoyable time listening to the history of the Civil War from the Northerners, and the War of Northern Agression from the Southerners ;-). The passion these men (and women) displayed gave you the impression that they would have fit right in with the Rebels and the Yankees.

Attending: Mr. B, Mr. T, Mr. O, Mrs. O, Mrs. B, Mrs. K, Mrs. G, Scott, Zach, David, Duane, Elisha, Ryan, Evan, Michael, Isaac
