ABOUT TROOP 220

Troop 220 was chartered in 1996 with the Key Peninsula Lions Club as the sponsoring organization. Through their generosity, the troop continues to grow and build, shaping young men who will be tomorrow's leaders. The troop began with Bill Macaras as Scoutmaster, and we were privileged to have him for more than a decade. Read more about him here. The mantle has been passed to John O'Dell, a worthy successor.
Troop 220 is a boy-run troop of boys 11-18, with most in the 12-14 age range. We have boys who are publicly schooled, privately schooled, and homeschooled. ALL boys who meet Scouting requirements are welcome! Boys may be dropped off, but most parents choose to stay and observe, visit, or participate.
A boy-run troop means that more experienced boys lead by example. Under the guidance and mentorship of the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters, they do the majority of the planning and execution of activities and campouts. It does not mean that the troop is a free-for-all. There is freedom within form. The troop agrees with and supports the purpose of Boy Scouts: to develop in a young man the ability to do things for himself and for others, to train him in outdoor skills, and to teach him patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred virtues.
Our troop is an active one and has at least one outing each month. The location and the activity for these outings is planned in advance by the Scouts during Patrol Leader Council meetings. Troop outings include weekend campouts, summer camp, hikes, swimming, and Council Camporees. High Adventure Outings are periodically scheduled (normally during the summer). The are extensive trips which last several days and may require extra preparation, training, and equipment. Normally a Scout must have attended a summer camp and be at least 13 years old in order to attend a High Adventure Outing.
The Troop uniform and Boy Scout Handbook are required at all troop meetings. Each Scout should also have a notebook in which to keep his records and any handouts and training materials received.
There is a more detailed explanation of the specifics of the Troop on the Information page.

For more information about the troop, please contact the Scoutmaster, John O'Dell, or any of the Assistant Scoutmasters listed on the contact page.
