KARCHER CREEK WASTEWATER PLANT

Several of the Scouts are working on their Public Health and/or Soil & Water Conservation badges. As part of the requirements, we recently took a fascinating field trip to Karcher Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Elisha says:

My Boy Scout patrol and I went to Karcher creek waste water treatment plant. First we sat in a board room, and learned the creek that runs through the waste water plant has nothing to do with the plant. And that it has about ten operators. Then we went on a tour around the plant. Miss Lorisa was the one conducting the tour, and is the scientist for the lab. When we first went outside it smelled awful, and we couldn’t wait to get inside. Then it smelled worse because we standing above the effluent. Then we went outside and saw where they caught the methane gas. They are planning to use the methane gas to heat the old folk’s home next door. Then after that we went to the area where the bacteria were decomposing the solid matter. This plant is trying to eventually make the solid into fertilizer pellets, but they are not quite there yet. We went to the place where there is sometimes an error, and they have to put on suits, and climb into it to dislodge clogs and whatnot. One time they had pipe burst, and effluent went up to around four feet. Afterward we went back to the lab where we got to look through the microscope where we say the bacteria in the water. They said if someone flushes their medicine down the toilet sometimes it stays in the water supply because it is very difficult to remove. Some cities use the treated waste water as tap water. When we asked her what education she needed she said a 2-year in biology and she had experience.
