SCOUT ACCOUNTS

We have a lot of different opportunities for Scouts to earn money to fund their activities and equipment needs. Money earned on official Scout fundraisers (excepting those designated as Troop funds) goes into individual Scout accounts. Although this money shows up in the general Troop fund, the treasurer keeps track of the dollar amount in each Scout's fund.

Scouts whose family situations prevent them from attending activities due to funding are encouraged to participate in fundraisers. When the cost exceeds the funds raised, there is funding available from the General Fund, at the parents' committee's discretion.

At the October 09, 2007 parents' meeting, it was decided by majority vote that the funds in the Scout accounts of those Scouts leaving the troop (for any reason, to include aging out) will remain with the troop. The exception to this is a Scout transferring to another troop; the funds will follow him to be deposited in his new troop's Scout account.

Further, by full consensus at the same meeting, it was agreed that Scout accounts shall consist of family account as well. For instance, Scout John Smith and his parents, Jim and Jane Smith, all work at fundraisers and earn $50 apiece. The Scout account has $50 in it, and the Smith family account has $100. If the Scout's account is deplete of funds, his parent may transfer funds from the family account to the Scout account. The Scout account may ONLY be used for the registered Scout.

Here is the official Troop 220 Policy for Scout and Family Accounts (as approved by the Scoutmaster on 04/18/2008):

USAGE OF SCOUT AND FAMILY ACCOUNTS:

Scout Account: The individual Scout account may be used to purchase items pertaining directly to Scouts. This includes, but is not limited to, such items as: gear (boots, sleeping bags, etc), campout fees, or purchases for merit badge requirements (merit badge books, supplies, etc). Scouts shall purchase the item, then submit the receipt to the Treasurer for reimbursement. If funds are running low in a Scout account, funds may be transferred by the parent from the Family Account into the Scout Account.

Family Account: The family account may be used ONLY for items that would normally require a family member to write a check to the troop. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, campout fees and Scout dues. There can be no reimbursements made from this account for gear or any other purposes. Parents may transfer funds from the Family Account into the Scout Account to help them cover gear purchases or fees.
